If you are thinking of acquiring a macaw as a pet, it is normal for you to contemplate different options. You can buy at a bird shop, in a hatchery or you can buy it to a private.
Logically, the best option is that you acquire it at a hatchery, because breeders can give a health guarantee and they have a knowledge of the pigeon and how it has been raised that none of the others have.
Another essential reason why you should choose a breeder as seller of your macaw It is because the hatcheries have very little transfer of chicks. Every time a macaw enters a facility, there is a risk that potentially dangerous viruses and bacteria will enter it.
You have to be very careful if you buy it from a private person online. There are many ads that are scams. If you want buy a macaw to someone unknown, you must distrust especially bargains, because, as you well know, cheap usually comes out expensive.
In case you want to buy macaws to a private individual, you should pay special attention to the documentation that they give you with them, since, frequently, we end up buying illegal birds.
Is having a macaw legal?
It is important that you know that having a macaw in your home is legal, but, yes, if you have acquired it legally and respecting the law. At the time of purchase, you must ask to be given the bird documentation, in order to verify that everything is correct.
One of the most important illegal businesses that we can find in the world is the trafficking of animal species. Unfortunately, a good number of exotic birds that we can find in many homes come from places where they lived in the wild.
The international agreement, opinions and legislations that exist, wish to ensure the survival of these species and try to conserve global biodiversity.
Large numbers of parrot species have suffered indiscriminate catches and persecutions, for a long time. For this reason, the world's population in the wild has declined in a worrying way, and that makes them find edge of disappearance alarmingly
You can only find animals bred in captivity or from legal imports in specialized stores and specialized breeders.
Unfortunately, there are still owners, customers and breeders who, because of cheap prices, continue to deal with birds that have been captured in their natural habitat. These are captured and moved in deplorable conditions, many times, thousands of kilometers away.
How to distinguish the female from the male?
The truth is that most of Macaws are monomorphic, this means that the two sexes are equal externally. There are some very slight differences that make only the most skilled people differentiate a male from a female.
If you want to know who is the male and who is the female and have complete security, you will have to go to a specialist or veterinarian to carry out a chromosomal or DNA analysis, so you can be sure who the male is and who the female.
But calm, the animal will not suffer any pain. To carry out this type of tests, a small pen is enough to obtain the genetic code of the animal.
Buy a cage for macaws
For you to have an idea of how a macaw's cage has to be large, it has to be twice as large as the size of their wings extended, from one to another. It doesn't have to be round, because this produces many disorders in birds, although in stores they may seem very beautiful.
You have to think that the cage door has to be wide, so you can take your pet out of the cage without any difficulty or you can put your arm in it if you want it to be in your arm.
It is essential that bars are vertical and that there is a short distance between the bars and the bars, so that the macaw cannot put his head between them and choke.
We advise you that stainless steel feeders, since if they are made of this material they do not spoil so easily. It is best that they are placed on the outside, because if they are inside, they could flee, when they are very young, through the door of the drinking fountain or the feeder.
Macaws are very clean birds, which is why you will have to remove the droppings very often, therefore, it has to be easy to remove the tray from the bottom of the floor grid. It is also advisable to be stainless steel or a material that does not spoil easily when cleaning.
When you have found the ideal cage, you have to decide what has to be inside it. The most important of all are the hangers, since they will be perched on them most of the time.
We recommend that they are of tree branch, since in this way they can sand their nails on them without hurting their legs, as is the case with plastic hangers. Naturally, you will also need some toys, such as stairs, hoops or rubber toys, with which you can exercise.
But in no way do you have to buy him a mirror, nor should he always have the same toys inside the cage. When you are cleaning the cage it is a good time to put some new toy, this way you will have a new way of exercising.
Where should the cage be located?
The cage of a macaw has to be much larger than that of a parakeet or a parrot, but this does not mean that it does not have to be located in a suitable place.
For example, you will have to place it in the room where you and your family spend more time, such as the living room, this makes the bird not feel alone all day and also helps keep it under control.
It is very important that in the place where you place it there are no drafts, therefore, you will have to avoid that it is very close to the windows and, at least, two of the sides of the cage must be attached to the wall, This way you will know where we are going to approach it.
Think that the cage does not have to be too high or too low. It is important that you put the cage at the same height as your eyes, because if it is too low these animals feel intimidated, and if it is too high they feel very powerful and then it will be practically impossible for you to be able to relate to them.
Is it a good idea to put the cage near the TV? Macaws do not have as many problems as other animals if the cage is located in front of a television, because it will help them learn words, although they cannot see it directly, since the screen flashes can cause epileptic seizures and even leave it blind.
Can you take it out of the cage?
We recommend that do not let the macaw out of its cage until you have maintained contact with it. Most likely, when you get him to eat from your hand, he loves to perch on your arm.
But when you take it out of the cage, it is important that you know that it is very likely that it will not pay attention to you. What he will do is investigate everything around him, so that he can know the environment in which he lives and get used to it.
When you do this, you have to let him do what he wants, to explore the entire room and when he gets tired he will return to his cage.
If you see that he does not want to return to his cage, do not grab him, approach him with a lollipop or candy so that, in this way, he will pose on your arm. It is at that moment when you have to give it to him, and then you can put it in the cage again.
Can you live outside the cage?
Some owners think that the fact that the macaw is locked in a cage is cruel, and for this reason they have been flying around the house since they were little. Here we will explain if this is advisable for the macaw.
Macaws are very intelligent birds and contrary to what happens with the parakeets, they are not very used to flying at home. The only thing they really need is a place to sleep, such as a hanger, where you can put newspaper on the floor so that your droppings fall on it.
You can perfectly raise a macaw in this way, however, you have to think that if you do it this way you have to be very careful that all the windows are always closed, because otherwise it could escape. It is also easier when you want to establish a relationship with him, although this does not mean you do not have to make an effort to earn their friendship.
How to make my macaw trust me
Macaws are very affectionate and friendly birds, but that does not mean that they will make friends with their owner upon arrival at home. You have to know that, as with the rest of the animals, you have to earn your trust.
It is essential that it be a young macaw or a young, because it is more difficult to establish trust in adult specimens, especially if he has lived free all his life. It is very important that you do not burden the animal or force it to establish a relationship with you, unless it is he who desires it.
So what should you do? First, it is important that your presence does not make you nervous. To achieve this, you must place the cage in a place where the daily life of the family takes place, in this way, the macaw will get used to seeing the members of the household.
It is normal that at first he complains, but you will see that he will calm down over time. To start making contact with him, it is important that you approach his cage, but if you see that he starts to get nervous, the best thing you can do is to move away until he has calmed down, so you will mark the limit of the distance with which you should start .
You will have to approach the cage little by little, until the time comes when you are no longer close to it. At that time is when you have to start “making your friend” with some goodies, such as millet on the branch, also called panizo, or any other food that excites you.
He thinks he might not want it, that's why you'll have to leave him alone with the lollipop in his cage. This process is important that you do it daily, until in the end you want to eat it if you offer it. Over time, it will approach, without fear, to eat it.
Have you finally done it? If so, the time has come for you to put your hand in the cage to try to eat it from your hand. This time also the process will have to be calm and slow, this way you will not get nervous. It is very likely that you will not achieve it right away, therefore, you will have to do the same thing daily until you finally want to do it.
How to feed a macaw
There are certain types of birds that we can say that eat everything and, although it is advisable that you give them I think, there are also other foods that you can supply them to have a full diet and that is very good for your health.
To begin, we will talk about what is called dry food. These have to be 10% of your body weight a day, it has to be a small assortment mixed seeds specific for macaws, of a high energy feed and some nuts like the hazelnuts, cashews, nuts and sprouted legumes.
In addition, they should also consume what is called wet food, which has to be 10-12% of the weight of the macaw, such as, for example, a fruit salad.
This Macedonia must contain 5 different products that contain a large caloric intake, such as grape, coconut or banana. You can also supply them with certain vegetables such as chard, spinach or lettuce, yes, they have to be very crushed.
Are there other foods you can supply? The truth is that yes, there are some foods that you can give from time to time, even if they are not part of your diet, such as a little bread, pasta or rice, and even some boiled egg. Although it is better not to get used to it, it is better to give them once a week as a reward or reward.
Very important, you should NEVER feed an avocado macaw, since this fruit is very toxic for this type of bird. It is also not recommended foods with a lot of refined sugar, such as cakes, sweets or industrial pastries.
How to teach a macaw to speak
Was it easy for you to achieve a good relationship with your macaw? If so, you will have to know that the fact of get him to talk It will be much more complicated. There are some macaws that learn words on their own after hearing them many times in the environment in which their cage is. But if you really want to learn what you want, it will be much more laborious.
First of all, you have to develop a practice schedule, which cannot be greater than 15 minutes, since the macaw will end up getting bored of hearing you say the same word so many times.
You must do the solo sessions, No distractions, only you and the macaw, and it is important that you have disconnected any type of electronic device so that it does not interrupt you during training.
The macaw has to be young, it's after 4 months when they start imitating sounds. However, you have to keep in mind that there are some species that learn to speak before others. There are even some who never say a single word.
The words you want to teach should be easy and you will have to repeat them several times during the 15 minutes of each session. Logically, he won't start repeating the word right away, but he may say it in less than a week.
If this is the case, give him a lollipop to reward him. If you pronounce it again, give it another treat, but not the third time, because if you are not going to get used to having to give him a prize every time he repeats that word.
Teach a macaw to speak It is an exercise that requires a lot of effort and you have to be very constant in it. To start, you can teach him words like “Hello” or your name or that of a household member when he sees it. If you see that the bird is easy to make sounds, in that case you can teach him to ask for food, for example "I want food".
If you see that you can't spend 15 minutes on your bird, there are more tricks so you can teach him how to speak. One of them, the most common, is to use a recording to learn to pronounce a word (this recording has to last the 15 minutes that the session would last). Recordings are currently used by computer or mobile phone.
How to raise my macaws
Do you think it is complicated to get the macaws to reproduce? The truth is that no, they can be left on their own and they are likely to have young on their own.
But if what you want is to intervene a little in this process, you have to know first of all that these birds cannot breed until they have reached sexual maturity, and this does not happen until they have reached four years of age.
First of all, you have to have a good couple of macaws. If they are two young animals that have been raised together, there is no problem, since they are animals that immediately make contact with each other.
You can buy the nest or you can let them do it themselves, for that you will have to provide them with the right materials to build it in their cage.
When they have already mated, the most common is for the female to lay two eggs, however, sometimes she can lay up to three. Incubation of these lasts about 30 days.
Young are born blindFor this reason they will depend completely on the mother until they reach 2 - 3 months, which is the moment when they already leave the nest because they already have feathers. After this, they will be with the parents another six months, until they learn to fend for themselves, when that time comes they can be put in another cage.
